Californians Are Smoking Less. Why That Means Less Funding for Some [Kern County] Early Childhood Services

For KQED July 18, 2023, Ana B. Ibarra reports that since 1998, some of California’s best-known early childhood services have been funded by taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products. Last month, the Kern County grand jury reported that its local First 5 would need to find additional revenue streams. The trend is accelerating following last year’s approval of Proposition 31 banning the sale of flavored tobacco products.
